Les signes mathématiques en anglais

+ (plus sign)

• + means PLUS (addition).
• On peut aussi dire AND ou ADDED TO.

Example: 2 + 3 = 5

• “2 PLUS 3 is 5”
• “2 AND 3 is 5”
• “3 ADDED TO 2 is 5”
• “2 PLUS 3 EQUALS 5”

- (minus sign)

• - means MINUS (subtraction).
• On peut aussi dire LESS ou SUBTRACTED FROM.

Example: 6 - 4 = 2

• “6 MINUS 4 is 2”
• “6 LESS 4 is 2”
• “4 SUBTRACTED FROM 6 is 2”
• “6 MINUS 4 EQUALS 2”

x / X (times sign)

• x means TIMES (multiplication).
• On peut aussi dire MULTIPLIED BY.

Example: 2 x 3 = 6

• “2 TIMES 3 is 6”
• “2 MULTIPLIED BY 3 is 6”
• “2 TIMES 3 EQUALS 6”

÷ / (division sign)

• ÷ means DIVIDED BY (division).
• On peut aussi dire GOES INTO (anglais oral).

Example: 8 ÷ 2 = 4

• “8 DIVIDED BY 2 is 4”
• “2 GOES INTO 8 four times”
• “8 DIVIDED BY 2 EQUALS 4”

= (equals sign)

• = is the EQUALS sign.
• On peut lire : is / are / equal / equals.

Example: 3 + 2 = 5

• “3 PLUS 2 EQUALS 5”
• “3 PLUS 2 is 5”

. (decimal point)

• . is the decimal point et se lit POINT en anglais (pas “decimal”).

Example: 3.7

• “three POINT seven” ✅
• pas “three decimal seven” ❌

Les 4 opérations

1. Addition = add
   2 + 2 = 4 → “2 PLUS 2 is 4” / “2 AND 2 is 4”
2. Subtraction = subtract
   9 - 4 = 5 → “9 MINUS 4 is 5”
3. Multiplication = multiply
   4 x 3 = 12 → “4 TIMES 3 is 12” / “4 MULTIPLIED BY 3 is 12”
4. Division = divide
   18 ÷ 6 = 3 → “18 DIVIDED BY 6 is 3” / “6 GOES INTO 18 three times”

Fractions and decimals

Une fraction : 1/5 = “one-fifth”
Un decimal : 0.2 = “zero POINT two”

Exemples

• 1/5 = one-fifth = 0.2 (“zero POINT two”)
• 1/4 = one-fourth = 0.25 (“zero POINT two five”)
• 1/3 = one-third ≈ 0.33 (“zero POINT three three”)
• 1/2 = one-half = 0.5 (“zero POINT five”)
• 2/3 = “two-thirds”
• 3/4 = “three-fourths”
• 1 1/2 = “one and a half” / “one and one-half” = 1.5 (“one POINT five”)
